The Yacht Insider: Sabre Yachts Prepares to Celebrate
A 40th anniversary rendezvous in Maine will include a traditional blueberry pancake breakfast.

At a time when other boatbuilders are declaring bankruptcy or closing up shop altogether, Sabre Yachts is planning three days of festivities to celebrate four decades of business.

The Sabre 40 Sedan made its debut in May and is about to go on a U.S. boat show tour.
Mark your calendar now: The company’s 40th Anniversary Rendezvous is scheduled July 9-10 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, which is pretty much due east of the builder’s manufacturing facilities in Raymond, Maine. Wotton’s Wharf will be home base, and the long weekend’s events will include Sabre’s traditional blueberry pancake breakfast on Sunday morning.
Sabre began operations in 1970 with a 4,000-square-foot building where a handful of employees built a 28-foot sailing yacht. Today, the company has an 83,750-square-foot facility where 175 associates assemble sail and powerboat models alike.
The newest is the Sabre 40 Sedan, which made its debut in May and is about to go on a U.S. boat show tour that includes New York City, Seattle, Boston, and Miami. It’s one of the models I’ve heard was actually selling during the September and October boat shows, sales that Sabre attributes to a combination of positive journalists’ reviews, downloadable videos, and sea trial results. Noteworthy from that sea trial performance data is that the decibel level in the boat’s main salon is below 80 dB(A) at wide open throttle.
That should be quiet enough to hear all the hoots and hollers from the crowd at the upcoming rendezvous in Maine, including all the horns blasting from the builder’s flagship Sabre 52 Salon Express model. If you’re interested in a glimpse at the start of the company’s next 40 years, my guess is they’ll have deck plans on hand for the Sabre 46 that is scheduled to launch in spring 2011.
I can’t wait for that party, either.
